Asemi Co. Tea & Coffee Cups - Kasama - yaki cup [Made in Japan]

Crafted in Hasami, Nagasaki, this distinctive cup is finished using a unique firing technique by Japanese artisan Masami Taniguchi.

Unlike conventional firing methods, the cups are smoked inside the kiln during firing, creating their characteristic bluish tones and beautifully rough, expressive surface. Because the final result of this process cannot be fully controlled, every cup develops its own individual colour, texture and markings, making each piece truly one of a kind.

The porcelain cups are first produced and fired in Hasami before several layers of a specially developed glaze are applied. Masami Taniguchi then completes the firing process in a kiln that was formerly used for producing traditional Japanese roof tiles — a distinctive technique that gives the surface its unusual depth and character.

The result is a contemporary Hasami-yaki cup with a highly individual finish, balancing refined porcelain craftsmanship with the unpredictable beauty of fire and smoke.
